🕊️ Public Lecture and Workshop on Human Rights

In response to the Iran–Israel war, which began on June 13, 2025, NGO HOPE is launching this initiative in collaboration with Project Lili / Life in Light – Human Rights. This project seeks to provide both emotional and educational support during this time of acute crisis. It is especially intended for those who are experiencing grief, fear for their families, and a sense of isolation.

Rather than remaining alone at home with these burdens, participants are invited to join a safe and respectful group setting where collective reflection, dialogue, and empowerment can take place. The workshops offer an opportunity not only for shared emotional resilience, but also for active political learning and civic participation.

By fostering democratic values, inclusivity, and intercultural understanding, this initiative offers a constructive response to increasing polarization and radicalization. Participants will engage with fundamental questions of human rights, democracy, and global justice, guided by renowned scholars in the field.

To ensure accessibility for individuals with language barriers, the workshops will include interpretation:

  • Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alice Pechriggl’s workshop will be interpreted into Farsi/Dari by Zahra Ghobadi, BEd., B.A.

✨ What to Expect

  • Engaging discussions led by an expert

  • Translations for accessibility

  • Short breaks during the sessions

  • Iranian snacks and drinks provided to ensure a comfortable experience

  • All participants receive an integration certificate of attendance

  • Travel costs covered:
Hand in your outbound ticket and show a photo of your return ticket – you’ll receive the money in cash on site.

📌 Which Democracy Best Realizes Human Rights?

📅 Date: 01.07.2025
Time: 5:00 - 8:15 PM
📍 Venue: Alps Adriatic University, Klagenfurt / Celovec, Z.1.09

For decades, scholars have analyzed the erosion of democratic regimes through permanent representation, oligarchization, and capitalist exploitation. The human rights established through democratic revolutions since the 18th century are now under scrutiny. This lecture and workshop will explore the complex relationship between democracy and human rights—how they reinforce or restrict each other, where political-democratic principles conflict with ethical-human rights values (freedom, equality, justice), and the role of the rule of law in mediating these tensions. The session will provide insights into tackling the current crises facing liberal democratic systems.

📌 Human Rights and Cosmopolitan Duties in Contemporary Political Philosophy

📅 Date: 09.08.2025
Time: 4:00 - 7:30 PM
📍 Venue: Alps Adriatic University, Klagenfurt / Celovec, Z.1.09

One approach to justifying human rights relies on international agreements that contractually establish specific duties. While this strategy provides a legal framework for sanctioning violations, it also has a limitation: legally enforceable obligations depend on the ratification of these agreements. This makes an alternative approach attractive—one that grounds human rights in natural law, deriving them from human nature itself.

This perspective is rooted in the tradition of cosmopolitanism, which holds that there is a universal human society where political relationships, rights, and duties exist analogously to those within a nation-state. Such a conception implies that political obligations transcend national borders, even in the absence of formal treaties. Recent debates on global justice have explored this issue, raising fundamental questions:

  • Who are the rightful bearers of cosmopolitan duties—individual citizens or nation-states?

  • What role do non-state institutions (e.g., the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, multinational corporations) play in perpetuating global injustice?

  • How do democratic deficits within these institutions contribute to human rights violations?

This lecture will provide an overview of how human rights can be defended from a cosmopolitan perspective against the increasing influence of non-democratic global institutions.

🦋 Standing for Justice & Women's Rights

War & Women's Human Rights Museum, Seoul

🌸 Team HOPE stands in solidarity with the former "comfort women" and the women’s rights and human rights activists in South Korea.

At the War & Women's Human Rights Museum in Seoul, we honor the memory of one of the greatest war crimes against women and girls in history—the institutionalized sex slavery committed by the Japanese Empire in the 20th century.

🕊️ This initiative serves as a reminder of the past and a call for justice, education, and empowerment for women worldwide.

🌍 We support the fight for truth, recognition, and human dignity.
